Job Purpose:  Functionsas an integral member of the Dubuque Anna B. Lawther Academy or Maquoketa School by assisting the classroom teacher.

Regulatory Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, 18 years of age.
  • Mandatory Reporter for Child/Dependent Adult Abuse. Must be trained within four months of hire date and every five years thereafter.
  • MANDT training required upon hire and every year thereafter.
  • Current BCLS (CPR/1st Aid) certification required within four months of hire date.
  • Medication Manager training preferred.
  • Must successfully complete child/dependent adult abuse and criminal background check,  including DHS evaluation (if needed, including documentation of follow-through for any stated employment restrictions); reference check forms (minimum of two); and employment physical, TB test and drug screen prior to contact with clients and as required thereafter. 

Job Duties

1. Stimulates and encourages attainment of each student's educational goals.
2. Establishes a positive working relationship with the students.
3. Establishes a positive working relationship with office staff, teachers and personnel from other programs, school and agencies through displaying a positive attitude, respecting the ideas of others and following the established lines of authority.
4. Maintains and promotes a teamwork relationship with co-workers, supervisors, residential facilities, agency administrators and other professionals.
5. Guides and instructs the students in the development of problem solving skills, individually and on a group basis.
6. Provides written/verbal input concerning each student's progress in the classroom as requested. (team meetings, substitute teachers,
7. Actively takes initiative and assists the students, as a group or individually, with school assignments and activities as assigned by the teacher or sub-teacher.
8. Assumes primary responsibility for the requisition and distribution of classroom supplies including all necessary record keeping and documentation.
9. Stays current on student procedures, etc. by reading and remembering what is in daily notes including appointments
10. Knows, understands and follows the information in student/faculty handbook.
11. Ensures that the students understand and follow the policies for program consistency.
12. Understands what attitudes, behaviors and conduct on worker's part will be most conducive to the healthy emotional development of the students.
13. Helps the students cultivate appropriate social, behavioral and interpersonal skills by encouraging ownership by the students in the school through role modeling.
14. Understands and implements school behavior intervention and behavior management policies and procedures.
15. Follows student behavioral plan as generally outlined in the IEPand any classroom contracts..
16. Implements physical holds only as needed and following correct MANDT techniques.
17. Documents all minor, major and staff incidents on the appropriate written form within timeframe.
18. Ensures that the health care needs of each student are met.
19. Completes clerical duties as assigned by the teacher/principal.
20. Attends staff orientation, in-service training, conferences, workshops, and other educational opportunities, as requested.
21. Summarizes data in a timely manner by completing the daily log, individual logs, and significant events and entering into Unison in an accurate and timely manner.
22. Accompanies and assists teachers during off-campus educational activities.
23. Supervises, assists and instructs the students on such events.
24. Provides transportation for the students, using agency vehicles,
25. Knows and obeys all state and local laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of a motor vehicle.
26. Responsibility for the physical care, cleanliness and upkeep of the facility. Performs routine maintenance tasks including minor housekeeping, in a timely manner.
27. Reports any other maintenance needs/work orders and property damage to the teacher or assigned office designee.
28. Cooperates in performing all other duties as assigned to best meet the overall student/program needs including temporary reassignments to other classrooms due to staffing levels or other requirements.
29. Must actively supervise students and address behavior issues during physical education class.
Transportation Duties (as applicable):
30. To assist in transporting students in a safe manner (to school, to home).
31. Arrives on time and as scheduled for bus/van duty.
32. Accompanies and assists students on the school bus or van route.
33. Secures a replacement if unable to ride/drive as assigned.
34. Ensures that the students understand and follow the bus/van policies.
35. Documents and reports any events occurring on the bus/van.
Med Manager Duties (as applicable):
36. Dispense medication when assigned and trained.
37. Communicates to the facility or parent all health related issues on each client.
38. Assists students when requesting PRN meds.
39. Completes necessary documentation regarding medication tracking and distribution.
40. To guide and instruct individuals in problem solving skills.
CHAMPS Program (if applicable):41Maintains and promotes a teamwork relationship with students and co-workers through our program (CHAMPS).
42. Guides students in development of work/life skills.
43. Acts as a job coach on site by supervising, encouraging, instructing and working with students.
44. Assists students in completion of work/project to including set up and clean-up activities.
45. Maintains and promotes a teamwork relationship with students and co-workers while guiding students in development of life skills in all areas, academic, social, behavioral
46. Supervises and instructs students throughout the community at all times
